Perur Patteshwarar Temple Coimbatore

Patteshwarar Temple:

Patteshwarar Temple is located at Perur in Coimbatore district. We can reach this temple from Ukkadam bus stand or Gandhipuram bus stand. From Gandhipuram, Patteshwarar Temple is 8.5 kilometers away. And it takes nearly 24 minutes to reach the temple via Siruvani Rd.

Patteeshwarar Temple
Gandhipuram to patteeshwarar Temple

If we go through Brooke bond and Siruvani Road it takes 9.4 kilometers to reach Patteshwarar Temple approximately travel time will be 25 minutes. Another route via Perur bypass Rd and Siruvani Road it takes 12.4 kilometers to reach Patteshwarar Temple approximately travel time will be 30 minutes.

And this magnificent temple was built by Karikala Cholan in 2nd century. Perur temple’s main deity is Patteswarar and Pachainayaki Amman. The temple architecture here is really wonderful and unique.

Patteshwarar Temple has the main attraction "kanaka sabha", where the beautiful golden statue of Lord Nataraja located. The temple devotees has a famous  belief that  mortal remains and ashes of dead people are turned into white stone in the temple after a period of 144 days. Temple has various pillars and halls with Lord Shiva sculptured with different posture.

Saint Sundarar is said to have visited the temple and sung songs in Thevaram about Lord Shiva, ninth century AD. The Chola rulers from the  period of 11th to 13th Century AD has given huge donations and many gifts to the temple. So they built ArdhaMandapa Hall and Mahamandapa Hall to inscribe the details of the donations and presents given by them.

The Panguni Uthram festival that falls in the month of March is considered to be the major festival of the temple. During September  locals celebrate the festival of dance Natyanjali,  bharathanatiyam dancers perform in the temple premises.

The temple is centre of attraction to display tradition and culture of Tamil Nadu.
Inside the temple premises  has a palm tree that never dies (known as Irava Panai) and the tamarind tree whose seeds never germinate (known as Pirava Puli).

Explaining the fascinating cycle of birth and death. Just like the trees, the temple itself, with its rich history, seems to exemplify the philosophy SAMSARA – the endless cycle of creation and DESTRUCTION, the reason for permanent existence of Nature.

Patteshwarar Temple has different names
Kamadenupuri, pattipuri, Adhipuri, Daksha Kailasham, Thavasiddhapuram, Gnanapuram, Kalyanapuram, Pirava Neri Thalam, Pasupathipuram, Western Chidambaram.

There is Hindu mythology of this temple related to purana. Lord Shiva self manifested as lingam with a foot mark of calf in head. When one time lord brahma stopped creation and thinking something that time Lord vishnu come to known this in order to continue creation activity.

Lord Vishnu approached kamadhenu, which is a sacred cow in heaven. Lord Vishnu asked kamadhenu to do deep penance to get boon for creation from Lord shiva.

As per Lord vishnu's wish kamadhenu went to kailash and do deep penance for several years penance went on. Best Lord shiva didn't come to know kamadhenu. Meanwhile rishi narathar came to kailash and saw kamadhenu is doing penance to Lord Shiva.

Narathar gave advice to kamadhenu go to dhakshana kailash and continue the prayer to the Lord surely you will get the boon. As per Narathar guidance kamadhenu went to dhakshana kailash which is the Patteshwarar.

Kamadhenu went and started praying to the Lord shiva. One day kamadhenu with son Patti planned to holy bath Lord shiva on that time mistakenly Patti kept foot on Lord shiva head. And kamadhenu got angered and try to punish son Patti, in order to protect Patti Lord shiva with infinite love appeared before Kamadhenu. And Lord said I will have the foot mark of Patti in my head as boon. And so this temple name came to know Patteshwarar.

And Lord said I can't give the boon of creation because this place is holy which free from cycle of birth. And so instead of boon Lord showered blessing and given the vision of Lords dance thandava.

To attain immortal and free from cycle of birth we need to pray to Lord Patteshwarar

Siruvani Dam is located in Palakkad district at kerala state.

Siruvani dam is located in Kalladikodan hill ranges in Western Ghats. The Siruvani Dam was built in order to overcome the water scarcity of Coimbatore city in Tamilnadu. Coimbatore city highly depends on Siruvani water which is most tastiest water in Asia.

Siruvani water is originated in hills which passes through herbs and contains lot of minerals in water. Still we can find  Mudugars and Irulars tribals belongs to this ranges.

Siruvani Dam surrounded by thick forest in Palakkad district of Kerala state and which makes the Siruvani highly isolated .

Siruvani Dam build across Siruvani River in 1927.  Sometimes whenever I visit coimbatore I like to carry the water due to sweetness of water.

Siruvani Dam is surrounded by Muthikulam Hill you can have the best view with green scenery in surrounding.

Since Siruvani water is only drinking water apart from maintenance people all others are strictly prohibited if you get VIP or higher official permission you can have a view closer.

Elephants and tigers roamed freely in the forest. After heavy rains, there was the danger of malaria. And we can leeches in rainy season. Also you can wild bison and lion tail monkey in this forest area frequently.

History of Siruvani Dam:

Siruvani water flow at Muthikulam falls is the major contributor to the Siruvani Dam.

After 40-year struggle take to bring Siruvani water to the people of Coimbatore by the historian C.R. Elangovan. First connection has connected on 1927 and about 110 number of water taps that supplied sweet water by the means of 6 connections from race course area in coimbatore city.

C.S. Rathinasabapathy Mudaliar the person made it happen possible for Coimbatore city. When C.S. Rathinasabapathy Mudaliar took charge as a member of Coimbatore Municipal Corporation as a chairman. He gave a new lease of life to proposed government project of generating hydro electric power from Siruvani Dam and also meets the drinking water requirements of the Coimbatore city. The South Indian Railway Company, a private company entered the project in 1913 and agreed to fund it and later, they dropped out.

Rathinasabapathy Mudaliar’s used his influence in Madras that helped kick-start the project in 1920. He visited Siruvani hills with the official survey team. The Revised Siruvani scheme was a package of drinking water and hydro electricity power projects. The water from Muthikulam falls, Pattiar, Paambar streams together become the Siruvani River. This project has taken full phase to go.

They started the construction of a check dam at Siruvani to collect the water and bring the major portion of water down through a tunnel. For this purpose
skilled labourers were recruited from Kolar Gold Mines of Karnataka. Though everything went smoothly, heavy rains played a heavy damage. It led to heavy landslides and the entire structure collapse.

But still Rathinasabapathy Mudaliar didn’t give up. After a quick recovery has been done, the water was brought to the town on April 26, 1929.

Most of the stream flows without any human intervention so the water is pure and rich in minerals and free from pollution.

Note: whenever you go have water enjoy the taste of it.
